So, if you’re wondering “should I work at TheLadders”, here’s what you should ask yourself:

Do I want the customers and my colleagues to just leave me alone so I can develop in peace and quiet and not be bothered with all those distractions? If the answer is “yes”, you won’t be happy here, and we don’t have a home for you. (But it takes different strokes to make the world go ’round, you can find plenty of jobs for all types of people on TheLadders.com.)

Do I want to meet real live customers, listen to their problems, and invent cutting-edge stuff that nobody has ever even dreamed of before and roll it out to the 4.5 mm high-end professionals that use TheLadders for making their careers better?

In that case, you belong here, and ought to apply on our careers page.

TheLadders Signature Program

TheLadders is an online service that connects career-driven professionals with the jobs and employers that are right for them.

The Ladders introduced Signature, a six-month program that is proven to help professionals find the next step in their career. Selected participants who actively engage in all components of the Signature program are guaranteed a job offer or their money back.

TheLadders: A job offer — or your money back — with Signature

We publicly launched Signature at the end of June when the nice folks over at CNBC invited me to the floor of the New York Stock Exchange to announce our new service.

Signature is our 1-on-1 job search program that pairs with you a Career Advisor here at TheLadders to make your job search easier, less stressful, shorter in length and with a better outcome for you and your family.

What’s the deal?

The program is $2,495 and six months long. We speak with you on the phone weekly or bi-weekly, and have a professional resume writer re-write your resume in line with your goals.

Then, when you follow the program, make your calls and take our advice, we guarantee that you’ll get an offer in your range. Or your money back.

Now, it’s only 3 months since we launched Signature on CNBC, but we’ve already had early successes!

Since that June day…

…Signature customers have started new jobs, that they landed through the program, at companies like Georgia Pacific, Sony, Deloitte and Citgo…

…Signature customers have accepted jobs with titles like Engagement Manager; VP of HR; Senior Director, IT; Sales Representative; CTO; and Senior Analyst…

…They’ve landed their jobs all the way across the nation: from Falls Church to San Diego, from Atlanta to San Antonio…

…And we’ve helped customers earn what they’re worth, with pay packages ranging from $111K + bonus to $165K + bonus to over $200K in total comp! In one case, we even helped a Signature customer turn her present situation at ~$90K into a new job at over $125K. That’s a pretty special situation, but she was pretty special, and she deserved it!

When you sign up on our Signature site, we’ll give you a call to see if Signature is right for you. It’s important for us to chat up front about realistic job goals within your pay range and industry/function expertise.

Speaking of having a chat, I spoke with our own Amanda Augustine, Program Manager for Signature, on the first 100 days of the program…

MC: What should people know about Signature and the job search?

AA: “There’s isn’t some magic bullet or quick-fix to finding a job. You’re going to have to dedicate time and energy if you want to land the right job. Job seekers need to be prepared to make that commitment, and understand that it’s probably going to take longer than the last time they seriously searched, even if you are a great candidate. The market’s saturated, you know!

A lot of job seekers out there don’t realize that until they’re deep into the search, so the reality is that it could take you more than 6 months to find a job. With Signature we’re helping clients cut that time down as much as possible by keeping them focused.

On average our clients find jobs a little over 4 months, and we’ve already seen some early successes since the June launch.”

MC: So what should I tell people?

AA: “I think it’s great for you to tell people about Signature, but you also need to be realistic. It’s a jungle out there, and it’s going to take them several months to find a job.

And also that they shouldn’t be applying to jobs that they have no business applying to. You’re not going to get a response to things that don’t deserve a response! We can’t change that.”

MC: What do people like least about the program?

AA: “Most people want to skip the prep work and start applying right away. And some want to be super-involved in their resume-writing process and don’t trust the experts.

In both those cases, they’re missing out on the most important step — figuring out the job goals.

Everything in your job search stems from those goals. If you don’t take the time to take inventory of your skill set and know what you’re great at, and be able to write it out, you won’t be successful in your job search because you won’t be focused.

That’s because those goals become your job search criteria: what types of companies, what types of roles, what types of industries, do you really want to (and should) apply to?

Can you really move, can your family really up and leave, or is it just you that wants to up and leave?

If you truly want to change industries, are you willing to take a pay cut to do that, if necessary? Are you financially able to take a pay cut?

You can’t write your resume until you figure all that out. You need to pick a target and then write a resume that works for it.”

MC: What do people like most about the program?

AA: “The one-on-one career coaching. People really like having their own personal sounding board and partner-in-crime who devises a game plan that makes sense for the job seeker.

They like having someone to serve as the voice of reason, and provide reality checks along the way to not only educate them but also keep them on track. And their advisors help them through the entire process, all the way through the salary negotiations. People really like that.

I’ve noticed that many times the clients stop referring to how ‘The Ladders’ or ‘Signature’ helped them, and instead refer to their personal Career Advisor — ‘John helped me get that signing bonus’ or ‘Moira changed my entire job-search strategy’ — they develop a personal relationship during the program. You can’t beat that!”

MC: Who’s the program wrong for?

AA: “The cowboy that wants to be a chef.”

MC: Really? Is that a saying we have around here?

AA: “Yeah, the cowboy that wants to be a chef, that’s what we call it. It’s somebody who wants to make a huge move that’s completely unrealistic given the economic environment.

In 2006 you could be a software designer who wanted to become a financial analyst. Today, in a saturated job market, they’re looking for somebody who meets the exact job requirements, not just skill set but career history and education.”

MC: Who’s the program right for?

AA: “People who are looking for the next step in their careers and don’t know where to begin, or already have a good start on the search but need someone to stay on top of them and keep them focused. We can help with both of these.

We’re currently sticking to TheLadders roots and only working with $100K+ job switches at the moment.”

MC: Any final thoughts?

AA: “This program works if you’re truly ready to start the search and put in the time. You have to be prepared to do your part — it’s a partnership, you know — and listen to your advisor’s, well, advice.

If you’re open to feedback and willing to try things our way, we can help make you successful. Trust me — we’ve been working very hard at this for a long time and we know what we’re doing. We’re here to help you get that right job offer — after all, that’s our job!”

~~~~~
Well, there you go.
President Obama today endorsed a hike in the capital gains tax rate. What does he want the rate to be? History has shown that hiking this tax will not work.
President Obama today called on raising the capital gains tax rate: “…Explain why somebody who’s making $50 million a year in the financial markets should be paying 15 percent on their taxes, when a teacher making $50,000 a year is paying more than that — paying a higher rate.”
25% capital gains tax rate? Under one interpretation, President Obama is calling for the marginal tax rate on capital gains to be the same as the marginal tax rate on someone earning $50,000 per year. This would imply a 25% capital gains tax
28% capital gains tax rate? According to theladders.com, a Fortune 500 CEO’s executive assistant commands a starting salary of about $100,000. The marginal tax rate on this salary level is 28%. So, President Obama might be calling for the capital gains tax rate to get back to its pre-1997 level of 28%
39.6% capital gains tax rate? President Obama laid out the principal that capital gains should not be taxed any lower than any other tax rate. If Warren Buffett’s secretary gets a big raise that puts her in a higher tax bracket, President Obama and Mr. Buffett would have the same complaint. If President Obama means that he wants to tax capital gains as ordinary income (as seems most likely), he would have to raise the rate all the way to 39.6 percent, the level it will be in 2013 and which he has said is the best top rate.
President Obama has already raised the capital gains tax rate. President Obama has endorsed a 20% capital gains marginal rate in his budget. In addition, Obamacare contains a 3.8% “surtax” on capital gains and other investments starting in 2014. President Obama went into today’s speech backing a 23.8% capital gains tax rate, and he called for an even higher rate than that.
Raising the capital gains tax rate is a lousy way to “soak the rich.” In 1986, the capital gains tax was raised from 20 to 28 percent. Capital gains revenues fell from $53 billion to $34 billion. By contrast, when the capital gains tax was cut from 28% to 20% in 1997, capital gains tax revenues rose from $79 billion to $89 billion, even at the lower rate. A similar thing happened in 2003 when the capital gains rate was cut from 20% to 15%—tax revenues from capital gains rose from $51 billion to $73 billion. If you tax something more, you get less of it; if you tax something less, you get more of it.
What do you think President Obama wants the capital gains tax rate to be? Will it work to increase tax revenue?
TheLadders: Lessons Learned from Success Stories
Six job seekers that landed senior-level positions share the lessons they learned from the job hunt
Whatever career experts may have to say about the job search, there’s nothing like first-hand experience. These members of TheLadders shared their stories and offered specific tactics from their own successful searches.
Focus your search strategy.
“The challenge is to find your niche. Three years ago, if you could fog a mirror, you could get a construction contract. Now it’s a little bit harder.” – OpsLadder member David Rosenof, chief operating officer and VP of Hunter Construction in Pompano Beach, Fla.
Read David’s story.
Demonstrate your value.
“There was a time during the dotcom boom when everybody wanted CRM or everybody wanted ERP and you were able to dump your solution at people. It is not like that any more. You have to be able to go in and is of each person within that organization. You need to be really consultative. You need to do your homework. You need to be able to show what differentiates you from other companies.” – Linda Schroeder, a SalesLadder
member who found a job working for a company whose products help other companies operate short-staffed.
Read Linda’s story.
Tune your resume.
“I was willing not only to focus on what I had been doing the past eight years, but what I did in my past by bringing back some of my older skill set to the table so that it would be considered as well. And that made a big difference.” – “Pam,” a FinanceLadder member who used a free resume critique to focus and brush up her resume, which led to a job in a company that focuses on restructuring and distress and wanted someone with both legal and business skills.
Follow the trends.
“Be as specific as you can. For example, the most current nursing trend today is wound care. Most people don’t know that. And that could be [open] to a nurse with a two-year degree or a LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse) with a one-year degree. So if that nurse were to take one week out of his or her time and become wound care-certified, they are good to go for $70,000 or $80,000 right there. So the message is: Follow the trends.” – Robert N., a registered nurse and UpLadder member who used his years of management experience to land an executive job at MedicalEdge Healthcare Group Inc. in Dallas.
-Read Robert’s story.
Look for opportunities, even in down markets.
Some job opportunities come from cleaning up the mess other companies made. “[Dreambuilder is] going to clean up the mortgages and then resell them because they are going to put a payment in front of the customers that they are going to be able to live with. They have been in business for six or seven years now, and they are ready to expand and take their business to the next level. Up until now, they have been a small Wall Street company, but today their business model is growing.” – Rob Onofrietti, a SalesLadder member and new director of sales at Dreambuilder Investments LLC.
-Read Rob’s story.
Translate your effectiveness.
“As I wrote my resume, I really had to translate what I had done into value numbers and how much I had saved,” said Suzanne Frawley, an HRLadder member who used the resume service to focus her pitch and land a job as learning and development manager at the local offices of German pharmaceutical giant Boehringer Ingelheim. For example, she was able to show how she had saved her firm more than $140,000 by sharing pace-learning programs throughout the company at a global level. “That was one of my bullet points – or ‘accomplishment statements,’ as we call them – on my resume. Once I had figured that out and put it into print, I thought: ‘Wow! That is what companies are now interested in.’ ”
-Read Suzanne’s story.
Overcome objections.
“I listed the things I was able to impact and the cost reductions and eventually the cost of goods sold and gross margins. Bringing that to the table allowed me to talk about the things I can do based on what I’ve done in the past. That made for a very clear picture. … I was willing to move, and I said that up front. A lot of people weren’t, so that was one advantage.” – John, an OpsLadder member who landed the VP job he’d been searching for despite pressure to look for something more junior or accept much-reduced salaries. The key to overcoming objections was to quantify the value he brought to a company and clearly show what concessions he would make to take a job.
-Read John’s story
Sometimes you have to reduce expenses by laying-off workers. Replacing them later, though, can be costly for your HR department or small business.
Whether it’s recruiting, onboarding, extra salary, or something else, hiring new staff isn’t cheap. Make sure you understand the entire financial picture before you move forward with staffing changes.
What a week here at TheLadders!
I spent the better part of Monday morning driving with fellow New Yorkers in The Ladders Career Cab. While I love authoring a weekly newsletter to ~5mm job seekers, there’s something special about one-on-one conversations with job seekers. Every situation is unique. Stay tuned for a video shortly, including a guest appearance from a member of NBC’s The Office!
Tuesday was not any calmer. We began the day by officially launching our new version of TheLadders which now caters to all career-driven professionals. If you haven’t visited yet, check out our new Resume services homepage. Tuesday evening, I hosted an event for 270 friends on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Attendees included our newest partner, StreetWise, who’s supporting growth in New York City by helping those job seekers who need it most. You can read more about the partnership, and the great work Streetwise does.
And I’ll end the week tomorrow on FoxNews, as an invited member of a guest panel debating the key points in Obama’s job plan and assessing the US employment conditions.
Saturday I may sleep in.
As we first announced on July 21st, we are thrilled to bring our services all motivated job seekers looking to advance their career. We’ve built this business since 2003 with a relentless commitment to finding the right person for the right job. That mission hasn’t changed. A handful of comments I’ve received from our ~5mm members shows we need to continue to communicate and prove our value. And we will.
What’s makes us so optimistic? Since July 21st, our Enterprise membership has risen by 12%. More Enterprise customers, means more engagement for our job seekers. At TheLadders, we still believe it’s not just about who you know (although we can help with that). What matters most is who you are.
Tips for Interviews: Intervewing Etiquette
Evolving technologies and the internet have sparked a massive shift in the way people consume and share information, as well as how marketers and other media professionals package the materials they create.
One company rooted in the printed form of media, News International, is now evolving by adopting a “digital marketing hub” that aims to increase collaboration between traditional marketers and tech professionals, Marketing Week reports.
“Lots of publishers talk about ‘digital first,’ but it is a dated concept because it is already intrinsic in everything we do,” Katie Vanneck-Smith, News International’s chief marketing officer, said in an interview with the source. “Digital is now in every job specification, from customer service executives to marketers.”
The newspaper industry in particular has struggled to adapt to an internet-centric world, but Vanneck-Smith said one of the corporation’s papers, The Sun, has found other ways to build up a “revenue earning mass-market brand extension” despite still offering free access to its content.
Being able to adapt will be important for the industry’s survival. As Marc Cenedella, CEO and founder of TheLadders.com, writes on his blog, newspapers’ difficulty has been an unwillingness to make changes to their models, rather than an ignorance of what to do or an inability to do it.
Utilizing its tailored approach to helping professionals find the next step in their careers, TheLadders is making a significant donation in cash and in-kind resources to StreetWise Partners. Employees at TheLadders have already begun volunteer work with StreetWise Partners, contributing time and expertise to helping StreetWise Partners advance the career goals and aspirations of its trainees.
“Our partnership with StreetWise Partners is a perfect fit for our evolution towards providing comprehensive job-search assistance for all professional job seekers,” Marc Cenedella, CEO and founder of The Ladders says. “We are excited to drive job opportunities and economic solutions through the combination of TheLadders’ job sourcing tools and StreetWise Partners’ resources for our shared community. We will work together to remove obstacles and start, or in some cases restart, the career path of those individuals StreetWise Partners serves, and help them reach their maximum career potential.”
Career Ventures, StreetWise Partners’ signature one-year program, matches trainees with up to two career mentors who impart critical workplace competencies and networking skills. The program helps trainees to achieve long term, sustainably improved employment in a professional office setting by teaching a variety of skills and instilling the confidence needed to successfully apply them.
I often get questions about how to “optimize” resumes for search engines so that they will be “easier to find.” Most of the people who ask the question are already somewhat aware of a process called “Search Engine Optimization” and understand that it is related to things called “keywords.” While this is not exactly wrong, I would like to dispel a few misconceptions:
Search engines are not all alike: Google would not find a resume the same way TheLadders would, so “optimizing” your Web site is very different from doing that to your resume.
Keywords are just, well, words. There is nothing “special” about any particular word — it becomes special only by how often it occurs and the company it keeps.
This article will explain how to make your resume more “findable” on sites like TheLadders and why that process is very different from the “SEO” we hear so much about in marketing publications.
It is true that The Ladders is a search engine just as Google is, but the two products look at documents very differently. No search engine is able to break a document down into segments without a “map” — just the way you wouldn’t know that you were driving from New York to New Jersey unless you had some sort of clue — road signs, landmarks and the like. Similarly, Google knows that news articles and such have titles because documents intended for display on the World Wide Web can carry special “tags” that instruct a Web browser on what the primary topic of that page is and how it is to be displayed in a browser. Your resume does not have the tags, and hence lacks the “map” that a search engine needs. So Google would probably see your resume as just one big blob of words. That’s good enough for many kinds of documents, but not for resumes … for reasons that I will get to. So, what does TheLadders do to read your resume? TheLadders has what we call a “parser” that knows how to find things without a map and when it finds them it provides these “tags” and creates a new, search engine-friendly version of your resume.
What does all this mean? It means that a resume is more than a blob of words — it is different from a news article or blog or e-commerce site. It has several “parts” — not just a title and text body. For example, a resume lists jobs and each job has two parts — a title and a description. Most resumes also have an executive summary section providing an overview of skills. The point is that each of those sections carries a different message. Therefore not all words are created equal for the search engine — the words in the titles say something different than the words in other parts of the document. Accordingly, this means something to search engines like TheLadders, but not to Google. Words in different parts will be considered differently. In particular, your “keywords” receive greater or lesser weight depending on where they are.
“Jack of All Trades”
Many people who actually understand the principle of SEO make a common mistake of not understanding the difference between how general search engines work and how specialized search engines work. The widely held belief is that if you sprinkle common words throughout the resume at least two at a time, everyone will find you — you increase your chances! I call this the “Jack-of-All-Trades” strategy and, surprising as it may seem, it will produce the opposite of the intended effect — nobody will find you. A Jack of All Trades is a very common type of job seeker. This individual has switched industries or radically changed the types of positions held throughout her career. This is not necessarily a career flaw but it is a resume flaw. The resumes that are found most often are those that contain the most searched-for keywords in the right places. That’s right — think about what recruiters are looking for in a particular position and then think about searches. If a recruiter is looking for a marketing executive, he is likely to search for a position-level word, such as “VP” followed by a position word like “marketing.” The resumes returned toward the top results for such a search are those of seasoned marketing executives who have “marketing” in recent and previous job titles. Other resumes may have the same number of such words but if they are not in the title, they will not end up on top of the results pages. The only thing “key” about “keywords” is what they say about your document relative to everyone else’s — and frequency alone in this case is not enough to make you stand out.
It’s an old-fashioned concept that actually wins the high-tech resume SEO game — show career progression. Pick a particular niche and stick with it! This idea seems counterintuitive — especially to the Jack-of-All-Trades — but it works.
This does not mean it is wrong to switch industries or try different jobs. Many people choose to have different resumes to account for different experience in special areas. If you are a marketing executive but you want to cover all bases and try for that job as an accountant, put together a separate resume documenting all your accounting experience … the Jack-of-All-Resumes is the better choice!
TheLadders: TheLadders.com’s Mobile Inbox allows job seekers to connect with recruiters while on the go
This article was originally posted on IntoMobile.
TheLadders.com, the web-based recruitment solution for professional talent ($100K+), unveiled a new feature called “Mobile Inbox” to provide job seekers with an easy way to connect with recruiters and hiring managers while on the go.
Mobile Inbox builds on top of the earlier features launched by The Ladders.com – My Pipeline, Follow Recruiter and 1-click communications. Here’s how it all fits together:
Follow Recruiter enables job seekers to “follow” recruiters, who in turn can deliver personalized messages and job related information via My Pipeline to a warm pool of prescreened jobseekers they know are engaged and interested in their content.
As for the 1-click communications feature, it is described as a Twitter-like “abbreviated process” that more accurately reflects “how two-way communication has evolved.”
This isn’t TheLadders.com’s first mobile effort – they already have an iPhone app, which is available as a free download (hit the link below to get it).
Commenting on the news – Marc Cenedella, Founder and CEO of TheLadders.com, said: “Searching for a job is a full-time commitment, but many job seekers have to put their efforts on hold while they are at work or away from their home computer. Mobile Inbox provides members with instant and continuous connectivity wherever they are.”
